New York: Elon Musk’s tunneling startup, The Boring Company, is reportedly in discussions to raise around $4 billion in a fresh funding round that could value the company at approximately $20 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. The funding discussions are ongoing, and the final valuation and investment amount could still change.

If completed, the deal would represent a dramatic increase from the company’s $5.7 billion valuation in 2022, when it secured $675 million in Series C funding led by major investors including Sequoia Capital and Vy Capital.

Founded by Elon Musk in 2017, The Boring Company focuses on developing underground transportation systems using advanced tunnel-boring technology. The company aims to reduce urban traffic congestion by constructing high-speed underground transit networks that transport passengers in electric vehicles.

Its most prominent project is the Vegas Loop in Las Vegas, an underground transportation system that carries passengers between key destinations using Tesla vehicles. The company is also working on expanding the network and pursuing new infrastructure projects in cities such as Nashville, while plans for an underground transit system in Dubai have also been announced.

The proposed funding comes at a time when investors continue to show strong interest in Elon Musk’s ventures despite broader market uncertainty. Analysts say a successful fundraising round would provide The Boring Company with significant capital to accelerate tunnel construction, expand internationally, and further develop its proprietary tunneling technology.

However, the company has also faced challenges over the years. Several proposed tunnel projects in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Baltimore were either delayed or did not move forward as originally planned. Even so, investors remain optimistic about the long-term potential of underground transportation infrastructure.

Neither Elon Musk nor The Boring Company has officially commented on the reported fundraising talks. Industry observers note that if the deal is finalized at the proposed valuation, it would rank among the largest private fundraising rounds in the infrastructure and transportation technology sector this year.
