The Federal Cabinet has approved the promotion of Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Military) to the rank of Field Marshal.
According to the official statement, General Munir was promoted in recognition of his superior strategic leadership during Operation Bunyad-e-Marsous and the decisive defeat inflicted upon the enemy.
It was also unanimously decided to retain Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Babar Sidhu in service following the completion of his tenure.
The statement added that those who rendered exceptional services during Operation Bunyad-e-Marsous will be honored with high-level state awards, including civilian participants and the families of martyrs and veterans.
The Cabinet stated that under the exceptional leadership of the Army Chief, Pakistan achieved a historic victory in the “Battle for Truth.” General Asim Munir demonstrated exemplary courage and determination while leading the armed forces and harmonizing their strategic efforts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also met with the President to inform him of this significant decision.
It is worth noting that General Asim Munir is only the second individual in Pakistan’s history to be promoted to Field Marshal, the first being President General Ayub Khan in 1959.
The rank of Field Marshal is the highest in the army hierarchy, above General, and is a five-star rank awarded in recognition of extraordinary and exemplary military leadership.
