The Indus River is experiencing high flood levels at Guddu and Sukkur barrages, while a low-level flood has been recorded at Kotri Barrage, with the water level currently stable.
According to the Federal Flood Commission (FFC), the Chenab River at Panjnad is facing a low flood situation, but the water flow is gradually receding.
Federal Minister Moeen Wattoo said that Tarbela Dam has been at full capacity since August 6 while Mangla Dam is 96% full, with an additional four feet of storage capacity available. He stressed that the government’s focus is on assessing damages and providing relief to flood-hit communities, adding that rescue and relief operations have been intensified in the affected areas.
On the other hand, a spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab confirmed that water flow in most rivers across Punjab has returned to normal. The Indus, Jhelum, and Ravi rivers are flowing at safe levels, while normal water flow has also been restored at Marala, Khanki, Qadirabad, and Trimmu points on the Chenab. At Panjnad, a low flood persists with water discharge reduced to 194,000 cusecs.
Reports further indicate that the Sutlej River is witnessing a medium-level flood at Ganda Singh Wala, while low floods are being observed at Sulemanki and Islam Headworks. The hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan are also reported to be flowing normally.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in several districts of Punjab over the next 24 hours as the 11th spell of monsoon rains continues until September 19. Showers are expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, Jhang, Sargodha, and Mianwali.
The PDMA spokesperson warned that on September 18 and 19, water flow may increase in nullahs and streams of Rawalpindi, Murree, and Galiyat. The official added that, on the instructions of the Punjab Chief Minister, local administrations remain on high alert, urging citizens to contact emergency helpline 1129 in case of urgent situations.
