Brittle nails that crack, peel or split easily are common and can affect anyone. Sometimes the problem is simply caused by dryness, frequent handwashing or exposure to cleaning products. However, persistent nail weakness can occasionally point to an underlying health issue.

Why Do Nails Become Brittle?

Nails are mainly made of keratin, a protein that also forms hair and skin. As people age, keratin production can slow down, causing nails to become thinner and weaker. Cold, dry weather and repeated exposure to water can also remove moisture from the nails.

Other possible causes include:

  • Frequent handwashing and repeated wetting and drying
  • Harsh cleaning chemicals
  • Frequent use of nail polish and acetone removers
  • Acrylic nails and nail extensions
  • Nail biting or picking
  • Injuries and repeated trauma
  • Nutritional deficiencies involving iron, zinc or biotin
  • Certain medical conditions, including thyroid disorders, anemia, psoriasis, eczema and fungal infections
  • Some medications and medical treatments

1. Keep Your Nails Moisturized

One of the simplest ways to protect brittle nails is to regularly moisturize your hands and nails. Creams or lotions containing ingredients such as lanolin or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) may help improve moisture and nail condition.

Make moisturizing part of your daily routine, particularly after washing your hands.

2. Protect Your Hands From Water and Chemicals

Frequent exposure to water followed by drying can weaken nails over time. Cleaning products and other harsh chemicals can make the problem worse.

Wearing protective gloves while cleaning or doing activities that keep your hands wet can help reduce exposure and protect the nails.

3. Be Careful With Nail Products

Regular use of nail polish, acrylics, extensions and acetone-based removers may contribute to dryness and nail weakness. Giving your nails breaks from these products can help reduce additional damage.

4. Keep Nails Trimmed

Long nails are more likely to catch on objects and break. Keeping them trimmed and gently rounding the edges with a fine nail file can reduce the risk of splitting. Avoid aggressively filing the nail surface.

5. Stop Biting or Picking Your Nails

Nail biting and picking can create small injuries and weaken the nail structure. Avoiding these habits gives damaged nails time to grow out naturally.

6. Maintain a Balanced Diet

Healthy nail growth requires adequate nutrition. A balanced diet containing fruits, vegetables and whole grains provides a range of nutrients needed for normal body functions. Deficiencies in nutrients such as iron, zinc and biotin may contribute to brittle nails in some people.

Supplements should not automatically be taken simply because nails are brittle. If you suspect a deficiency, discussing it with a healthcare professional is a better approach.

7. Consider a Nail Strengthener

Some nail strengtheners containing nylon fibers may help protect weak nails. Health experts also note that improvement takes time because the nail needs to grow out. It may take several weeks or months to see noticeable changes.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Brittle nails are usually not serious, but persistent or severe changes should not always be ignored. Consider seeing a doctor or dermatologist if your nails:

  • Continue breaking despite home care
  • Crack or split frequently
  • Become painful, swollen or red
  • Develop unusual discoloration
  • Change significantly without an obvious reason

Medical advice is especially important if nail problems occur alongside fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, skin rashes or numbness, as these symptoms can sometimes accompany an underlying condition.

The Bottom Line

Brittle nails often result from everyday factors such as dryness, frequent handwashing, chemicals and nail treatments. Regular moisturizing, wearing gloves, limiting harsh products, keeping nails trimmed and maintaining a balanced diet can help protect them. If weakness continues or is accompanied by other symptoms, a healthcare professional can help identify the underlying cause.
