ST. PETE BEACH, Florida — The latest attraction on Florida’s Gulf Coast isn’t a high-speed coaster or a flashy resort. It’s a quiet, glowing gallery where the primary residents have no brains, no bones, and no heartbeat.

The newly opened Jellyfish Exhibit at the St. Pete Pier has transformed a former utility space into a series of floor-to-ceiling cylindrical tanks. It’s a sensory shift from the chaotic sunlight of the beach outside to a darkened, rhythmic underwater world.

The exhibit features more than 20 species, ranging from the common Moon Jelly to the striking, neon-streaked Sea Nettles. Each tank uses specialized laminar flow technology—a circular current that keeps the delicate creatures from bumping into walls or getting trapped in intake valves.

“They are living art,” says exhibit curator Sarah Jenkins. “Most people see a jellyfish and think of a sting or a nuisance. Here, they see the way they pulse. It’s hypnotic.”

The design choice was deliberate. By removing the typical signage clutter and focusing on low-frequency ambient lighting, the facility forces visitors to slow down. The movement of the jellies creates a natural, visual metronome that seems to lower the collective heart rate of the crowd.

Beyond the visuals, the exhibit serves as a marine research satellite. Biologists are using the space to study the “bloom” patterns of local jellyfish populations, which have been increasing in frequency due to warming coastal waters. Staff perform daily water quality checks and feed the jellies a specialized diet of enriched brine shrimp, ensuring the specimens remain healthy despite their notoriously short lifespans.

For the casual tourist, the appeal is simpler. It’s a chance to look at something that feels otherworldly without needing a scuba tank.

The exhibit is open daily through the end of the summer season. As the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico, the gallery’s blue-light hue becomes the most consistent glow on the pier—a reminder that some of the most captivating life in Florida doesn’t need to roar to get your attention.
