A serious incident of alleged medical negligence has come to light at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, where part of a female patient’s large intestine was removed during a surgery intended for a kidney operation. The 42 year old patient, Sameera, a resident of Okara, had been admitted to the Urology Ward for surgery to remove a non functioning kidney.
According to sources, during a laparoscopic nephrectomy, a large section of the patient’s large intestine was mistakenly identified as the non functioning kidney and was removed. When the situation was discovered during the operation, general surgeons were immediately called in.
The general surgeons performed an emergency laparotomy and saved the patient’s life. However, due to the damage to the large intestine, the patient had to be fitted with a colostomy bag. The affected woman is currently under treatment in the surgery ward. As a result of the incident, the patient may face long-term medical complications, while concerns are being raised over the alleged negligence.
