A Karachi university student was held at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon while standing outside his home in the city’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal neighborhood. CCTV footage of the incident shows the victim being approached by two armed men on a motorcycle.

The video captures the moment the passenger hops off the bike, pistol drawn, and lunges toward the student. The victim, caught off guard near his front gate, offers no resistance. He hands over his mobile phone and wallet within seconds. The assailant then scrambles back onto the waiting motorcycle, and the pair flees into the afternoon traffic.

The footage has since circulated widely on social media, reigniting local frustration over the city’s persistent street crime. For residents in the area, the brazen nature of the attack—occurring in a residential street during daylight hours—is not a surprise; it’s a pattern.

Police officials confirmed they have obtained the footage and are currently reviewing it to identify the suspects. So far, no arrests have been made. Investigators say they are tracking the motorcycle’s route through nearby security cameras, though the suspects’ faces remain obscured by helmets.

Street crime in Karachi has surged over the past year, with mobile phone snatching reaching record levels. Official data from the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) shows thousands of incidents reported monthly, but activists argue the actual number is significantly higher due to victims avoiding the tedious police filing process.

The victim, who is a student at a local university, was reportedly returning home from a study session when the robbery occurred. He was unhurt, but the loss of his phone and identification documents has left him stranded.

As the city’s law enforcement agencies promise yet another crackdown on motorcycle-borne criminals, the reality for the average Karachiite remains unchanged: a simple walk to the front door has become a gamble.
