LAHORE — Police have arrested a man who staged his own kidnapping, hoping to extract a hefty ransom from his own family to settle mounting personal debts.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Muhammad Asif, vanished from the Johar Town area on Tuesday. Within hours, his family began receiving frantic, anonymous calls from a burner phone. The caller demanded two million rupees for his safe release, threatening to kill the captive if the money didn’t arrive by midnight.
“He thought he’d outsmart everyone by playing both the victim and the mastermind,” said a senior police official familiar with the investigation.
The breakthrough came when digital surveillance teams tracked the location of the ransom calls. Instead of a remote hideout, the signal originated from a low-budget hotel less than five kilometers from the suspect’s own home. When officers raided the room, they found Asif alone, calmly waiting for his family to pay up.
The scheme unraveled under minimal pressure. During initial questioning, the suspect admitted he owed money to several local lenders and saw the staged abduction as his only way out of a financial hole.
“The family was terrified, borrowing money from relatives and neighbors to meet the demand,” the officer added. “They were genuinely fearing for his life.”
The suspect remains in custody at the local police station. Authorities have registered a case of fraud and public mischief against him. He faces a lengthy legal battle, and the family he tried to extort is now left to deal with the fallout of his desperate gamble.
