Karachi’s dry spell broke Tuesday as light showers hit parts of the metropolis, offering a brief respite from the lingering heat. Areas including Surjani Town, North Karachi, and parts of the city center reported intermittent drizzle throughout the afternoon, catching many commuters off guard.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed the light rainfall, attributing the shift to a low-pressure system currently hovering over the Arabian Sea. While the precipitation provided a momentary drop in the mercury, the humidity levels remain high, keeping the city’s heat index at uncomfortable levels.

Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz indicated that this is merely a precursor to a more active weather pattern. “Expect scattered thunderstorms across the city over the next 48 hours,” he said, noting that the intensity is likely to pick up by Wednesday evening.

For a city where urban infrastructure often struggles with even moderate rainfall, the forecast brings immediate logistical concerns. The provincial disaster management authority has issued a standard advisory, urging citizens to stay away from power lines and avoid unnecessary travel during potential downpours.

Despite the warnings, the city’s power utility, K-Electric, remains under scrutiny. Residents in low-lying areas are bracing for the usual power outages that follow even minor rain incidents in Karachi. The utility has yet to issue a specific update on its readiness for this current system, other than standard safety reminders posted to its social media channels.

While the rain is welcomed by those desperate for cooler temperatures, the city’s drainage system—often clogged by solid waste—remains the primary point of failure. Whether this system delivers a refreshing change or another cycle of urban flooding will depend on the intensity of the next 24 hours.
