Former provincial minister Raza Haroon’s car was targeted by thieves outside his residence in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) late Wednesday night. The incident, which occurred in a high-security residential zone, has once again underscored the city’s persistent struggle with street crime.
Haroon, a former leader within the MQM-P and PSP, confirmed that the burglars shattered his vehicle’s window to gain entry. The suspects made off with personal belongings and sensitive documents left inside the car.
Police officials arrived at the scene shortly after the report was filed, collecting forensic evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from nearby houses. Despite the presence of private security and police patrols in the area, the perpetrators managed to escape undetected.
The incident is part of an alarming trend across Karachi. Residents in upscale neighborhoods like DHA and Clifton have reported a sharp increase in vehicle break-ins and mobile snatching over the past several months. For many, it’s proof that even the city’s most “secure” pockets are no longer safe from opportunistic criminal activity.
Haroon has urged the authorities to expedite the investigation. He noted that the audacity of the thieves—operating in a well-lit, monitored street—points to a level of brazenness that has left many locals feeling vulnerable.
Senior police officers involved in the investigation told reporters that they are tracking a local gang suspected of similar break-ins in the district. They’ve promised a swift response, though residents remain skeptical.
For now, the investigation remains open. Haroon is currently compiling a full list of missing items for the formal FIR, while neighborhood patrols have been advised to increase surveillance during late-night hours.
