Indonesian authorities have arrested a Malaysian commercial pilot after discovering 55 pounds (25 kilograms) of ecstasy hidden inside his luggage at a regional airport.

The suspect, identified by local police as a pilot for a major regional carrier, was intercepted shortly after landing. Customs officers flagged his bags during a routine scan, revealing a cache of narcotics that officials estimate carries a street value of millions of dollars.

The arrest marks a significant breach of aviation security. Investigators are now scrutinizing the pilot’s flight logs and previous travel history to determine if this was a one-off attempt or part of a larger, established smuggling route.

“We are looking at his network,” a senior customs official told reporters Thursday. “A pilot has unique access, and we need to know if this individual was operating alone or acting as a courier for a wider syndicate.”

Under Indonesia’s strict narcotics laws, drug trafficking offenses carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty. The pilot is currently being held in a detention facility as police coordinate with Malaysian authorities to trace the origin of the seized shipment.

The airline involved has issued a brief statement confirming they are cooperating fully with the investigation. They have suspended the pilot indefinitely, pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

For now, the suspect remains in custody, facing the prospect of a lengthy trial in a country where drug crimes are prosecuted with extreme prejudice.
