Mike Hesson has cleared the air regarding his involvement in the Pakistan cricket team’s recent selection shake-up, stating he had no hand in the decisions that led to the exclusion of marquee players.

The interim coach addressed the internal restructuring during a brief media interaction this week, looking to distance his advisory role from the board’s controversial personnel calls. His message was blunt: the current squad composition is the product of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) hierarchy, not his coaching mandate.

The shake-up—which saw high-profile names dropped following a string of poor performances—has sparked a fierce debate among fans and former players. Critics argue that discarding veteran talent without a clear succession plan invites instability, while the board maintains that a “drastic reset” was the only way to salvage the team’s international standing.

Hesson, known for his analytical approach during his tenure with New Zealand and various T20 leagues, has been brought in to stabilize the dressing room and refine technical execution. However, he appears wary of being pinned as the architect of the board’s political maneuvers.

“I provide input on technical performance and match-day strategy,” Hesson told reporters. “Selection policy is a separate lane. I wasn’t involved in the specific changes made to the roster.”

This clarification arrives as the team prepares for a high-stakes series, with pressure mounting on the PCB to justify the sudden cull. By isolating himself from the selection process, Hesson is insulating his coaching reputation from the inevitable fallout if the new-look squad fails to deliver immediate results.

The board now faces the burden of proof. With the tournament calendar intensifying, the decision to sideline seasoned campaigners will either be remembered as a bold, necessary evolution—or a tactical blunder that cost the team its competitive edge.
