The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has signaled its intent to back the government’s latest legislative agenda in the National Assembly, effectively clearing the path for the bill’s passage. Leadership from both the PPP and the ruling coalition held a series of closed-door meetings in Islamabad over the last 48 hours to secure the necessary numbers.

The deal marks a strategic alignment between the two parties, ensuring the government avoids a potential embarrassment on the floor of the house. For the PPP, the support comes with strings attached; party insiders suggest concessions were made regarding provincial development funds and specific amendments to the bill’s language.

“We have reached a working understanding to ensure the house remains functional and legislation proceeds,” a senior PPP lawmaker told reporters on condition of anonymity. He declined to detail the specific clauses modified during the negotiations.

The government struggled to build a consensus earlier this week, as smaller coalition partners and independent members expressed reservations over the bill’s long-term economic impact. With the PPP’s backing, the government now commands a comfortable majority to bypass the opposition’s expected filibuster.

Opposition benches have already signaled their intent to protest, labeling the alliance a “backroom deal” that ignores public sentiment. They argue the legislation—which touches on fiscal policy—requires broader parliamentary debate rather than a swift, forced vote.

Despite the friction, the government’s floor managers are confident. They expect to table the bill for a final vote as early as tomorrow, provided no last-minute disagreements emerge during the parliamentary committee review.

The move cements the PPP’s role as the primary stabilizer for the current administration. Whether this partnership holds during next month’s budget session, however, remains the question that will define the political landscape in the coming weeks.
