A group of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers arrived at the Sindh Assembly on a donkey cart Tuesday, a theatrical protest against the government’s latest round of fuel price hikes.

The legislators sat atop the cart as it rolled toward the assembly gates, holding placards and chanting slogans against the federal government’s economic policies. They framed the demonstration as a direct response to the rising cost of living, arguing that fuel prices have pushed private transport out of reach for the average citizen.

“If the government continues to crush the people with these prices, this is the only transport left for us,” said one lawmaker as he stepped off the cart.

The stunt was designed to grab headlines, and it succeeded. Security personnel watched as the cart navigated the heavy traffic outside the provincial assembly, forcing commuters to slow down. While the move drew jeers from political opponents, it underscored the growing frustration within the opposition ranks regarding the current economic trajectory.

Critics in the assembly dismissed the protest as a purely performative act. They pointed to the PTI’s own track record during its time in power, suggesting that the opposition is attempting to rewrite history regarding its management of the national economy.

Despite the skepticism, the message resonated with a segment of the public struggling with record-high inflation. Gasoline prices have become a primary political weapon in Pakistan, with every increase serving as a lightning rod for street-level anger.

The lawmakers left the cart outside the assembly building before heading inside for the session. Whether the protest impacts policy remains unlikely, but for the PTI, the goal was simple: ensure the optics of the fuel crisis remain squarely in the public eye.
