Heavy rain swept across parts of Punjab on Wednesday, breaking a prolonged dry spell and offering residents a sharp reprieve from unseasonable warmth.

The downpour hit Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad by mid-afternoon. In downtown Lahore, streets turned slick within minutes as the sky darkened, forcing commuters to seek shelter under flyovers and shop awnings. The Meteorological Department recorded the highest accumulation in the provincial capital, where localized flooding in low-lying areas quickly became a headache for the city’s traffic wardens.

This weather shift follows a week of dry, stagnant air that had health experts worried about rising smog levels. The rain, while disruptive to evening traffic, has effectively scrubbed the air, leading to a noticeable drop in the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings across the Lahore division.

“The system moving in from the northwest is pushing out the heat,” a meteorologist told reporters earlier today. “We expect the current intensity to taper off by late night, though the mercury will stay low through the weekend.”

For farmers in the rural belts of Sargodha and Sahiwal, the timing is critical. Agricultural experts suggest the moisture is beneficial for the upcoming wheat sowing season, provided the rain doesn’t turn into a prolonged deluge that could damage standing crops.

Despite the relief, the provincial disaster management authority has issued a standard alert for the northern districts. They’ve warned of potential urban flooding if drainage systems—already clogged with debris—fail to handle the volume.

The rain is expected to clear by Thursday morning, leaving behind a crisp, chilled atmosphere that signals the official arrival of winter for the region.
