WANA — A prominent religious scholar was killed Tuesday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated inside a crowded supermarket in South Waziristan’s Wana bazaar.

The blast rocked the busy commercial hub during peak shopping hours. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the explosion tore through the store, shattering storefronts and sending shoppers fleeing into the streets. Security forces cordoned off the area within minutes, but the attacker had already vanished into the bustling crowds of the market.

Local police confirmed the scholar died on the spot. His identity has not been officially released by authorities, but residents say he was a well-known figure who frequently spoke on local issues. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, though the region has seen a steady uptick in targeted violence against clerics and tribal elders over the last several months.

“The situation is tense,” said one local shopkeeper who was two blocks away when the device went off. “People are afraid to even open their shops now. We don’t know who is safe anymore.”

The incident marks a grim escalation in the security environment of South Waziristan. While the district had experienced relative stability following the conclusion of major military operations, the recent resurgence of militant activity has left tribal leaders increasingly vulnerable.

For the residents of Wana, the question isn’t just about who planted the bomb, but why the security apparatus failed to prevent an attack in one of the district’s most heavily monitored areas.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding buildings. Whether this leads to an arrest or becomes another unsolved case in the region’s long history of violence remains to be seen—but for now, the local community is bracing for the fallout.
