The Sindh government has ordered an immediate ban on the use of official, government-issued vehicle registration plates on private cars. Provincial authorities confirmed the directive late Wednesday, citing widespread misuse that has allowed unauthorized individuals to bypass traffic laws and security protocols.

The crackdown targets private vehicle owners who have been illegally displaying “Government of Sindh” plates or official department insignias. For years, these plates have served as a “get out of jail free” card, granting drivers immunity from traffic stops, toll fees, and parking regulations.

“We are clearing the streets of impersonators,” a senior official at the Sindh Transport Department said. “There is no excuse for a private citizen to be driving a vehicle that claims to be part of the government fleet.”

Traffic police have been instructed to impound any vehicle found with unauthorized official plates. The order also extends to vehicles that display “Provincial Assembly” or “Secretariat” tags without proper authorization. Officers have been given the green light to remove these plates on the spot and issue heavy fines to the owners.

The move follows a series of public complaints regarding reckless driving and security risks. Law enforcement agencies have struggled to track vehicles involved in hit-and-run incidents or criminal activity when the plates displayed are either fake or belong to government departments that have no record of the vehicle.

While the transport department has yet to release the exact number of illegal plates confiscated since the order was issued, sources within the traffic police department suggest the campaign will be aggressive. Checkpoints are being established across Karachi and other major urban centers specifically to target high-end SUVs and luxury vehicles often associated with this practice.

For the average motorist, the policy aims to restore a sense of accountability on the road. Whether the provincial government can sustain this enforcement remains the primary question, as previous attempts to curb the use of unauthorized plates have often stalled due to political pressure and bureaucratic pushback.

Drivers caught violating the order now face immediate vehicle impoundment and, in cases of repeated offenses, potential legal action for impersonation.
