Thousands of travelers remain stranded at Iraq’s border crossings tonight as security forces struggle to contain surging crowds. The scenes are frantic — families pushing against iron gates, children crying in the heat, and guards firing warning shots into the air to prevent a total breach.

The bottleneck started early Tuesday morning. Thousands of pilgrims, many traveling on foot, descended on the Zurbatiyah and Shalamcheh crossings simultaneously. Local authorities, caught off guard by the sheer volume of people, shuttered the gates to prevent overcrowding, but the move only triggered a dangerous crush.

“We were promised a smooth crossing,” said Ali Hassan, a pilgrim trapped near the Zurbatiyah checkpoint. “Now we’ve been here for fourteen hours without water or shade. People are fainting. The guards are just watching from behind the steel.”

Interior Ministry officials in Baghdad have yet to provide a timeline for clearing the backlog. A spokesperson cited “unprecedented pressure on infrastructure,” but critics point to a deeper failure in planning. Despite warnings of high traffic volumes weeks ago, the government failed to increase staffing or open additional transit lanes.

The chaos isn’t just a logistical headache; it’s a security liability. With thousands of people packed into narrow transit corridors, the risk of a major crush injury is spiking by the hour. Aid workers on the ground report limited access to medical supplies, leaving the sick and elderly vulnerable.

The current situation is a sharp reminder of the fragility of Iraq’s border infrastructure. Previous attempts to digitize entry visas and streamline the process have stalled in the face of local bureaucracy, leaving travelers to rely on physical checkpoints that simply aren’t built for this kind of scale.

Until the gates reopen, the crowd is growing. Every hour of delay increases the likelihood of a secondary incident as frustration turns to desperation. For now, the border remains a locked wall, and the people on the other side are running out of options.
