NEW YORK (AP) James Gunn’s Superman is proving to be a powerful force at the North American box office, earning $57.3 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
Despite new releases like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Smurfs, and Eddington, none came close to challenging Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ superhero juggernaut. Superman only dropped 54% from its opening weekend a standard dip for big-budget summer movies.
The film has now amassed $406.8 million worldwide in just two weeks, a strong start for a film that DC Studios hopes will relaunch its cinematic universe. The next major challenge comes next weekend with the release of Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps by Disney.
Backed by positive audience reactions and strong reviews, the $225 million film is expected to turn a healthy profit in the coming weeks.
Superman is a crucial piece of DC Studios’ new 10-year strategy, overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, to revamp its comic book franchises. Upcoming titles include Supergirl and Clayface, slated for 2026.
Meanwhile, Superman isn’t the only big player in theaters. Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Rebirth, now in its third week, claimed the second spot with $23.4 million. Starring Scarlett Johansson, the seventh Jurassic installment has already raked in $648 million globally.
