VIENNA — A priceless diamond necklace, valued in the millions, was stolen from a high-security display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum early Tuesday morning. Police say the thieves bypassed advanced laser sensors before shattering the reinforced glass case in a precision raid that lasted less than three minutes.

The heist occurred at 3:15 a.m. local time. While the museum’s alarm system triggered almost immediately, the perpetrators had already vanished into the narrow, winding alleys of the city’s historic district by the time security teams arrived.

“They knew exactly what they were looking for and where the blind spots were,” said Vienna Police spokesperson Thomas Steiner. “This wasn’t an act of impulse. It was a calculated, professional operation.”

Investigators are currently reviewing hours of surveillance footage, though the suspects appear to have used signal jammers to loop or disable key cameras during the break-in. No fingerprints or DNA evidence have been recovered from the gallery floor.

The necklace, a 19th-century heirloom featuring 40 carats of diamonds set in blackened silver, has been a centerpiece of the museum’s imperial jewelry collection for decades. Its loss is not just a financial blow, but a significant cultural setback for the institution.

Museum curators have shuttered the wing to the public indefinitely while forensic teams comb the site. Insurance adjusters are already on the ground, though they admit that pieces of this historical significance are notoriously difficult to trade on the black market without detection.

“We are cooperating fully with authorities,” said museum director Elena Fischer, standing outside the police cordon Tuesday afternoon. “We are devastated, but our primary focus is the safe recovery of this irreplaceable artifact.”

For now, the city’s major transit hubs are on high alert, with border patrols monitoring outgoing traffic for any sign of the stolen jewelry. The thieves remain at large, leaving behind a shattered display and a list of questions that investigators are struggling to answer.
