VIENNA — A high-security exhibition at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum was breached early Tuesday morning, as thieves bypassed sophisticated alarms to snatch a diamond-encrusted necklace valued at several million euros.

The heist, which took less than four minutes, has left local authorities scrambling to secure the city’s other cultural institutions.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after 4:00 a.m. following a silent alarm trigger. They found the display case shattered, the glass reduced to shards on the museum’s parquet floor. The necklace—a 19th-century heirloom centerpiece of the “Imperial Treasures” collection—was gone.

“They knew exactly what they were looking for,” said Inspector Klaus Steiner, the lead investigator on the case. “This wasn’t a smash-and-grab by amateurs. They neutralized the laser grid before touching the glass.”

The stolen piece, known as the *Habsburg Star*, features over 150 carats of diamonds. Its value on the open market is estimated at €4.5 million, though experts suggest its historical provenance makes it nearly impossible to sell through legitimate auction houses.

Museum staff discovered the breach during a routine security sweep, but by the time the perimeter was locked down, the suspects had vanished into the narrow, winding streets of the city’s First District. Surveillance footage released this afternoon shows two individuals dressed in dark, non-descript clothing moving with practiced efficiency through the gallery.

Security experts are now pointing to a potential internal failure. The museum’s alarm system, upgraded just last year, failed to alert central dispatch until the thieves were already exiting the building.

“We are reviewing every access log, every keycard swipe, and every maintenance contract from the last six months,” said museum director Elena Fischer. She declined to comment on whether any staff members were currently under investigation.

For now, the museum remains closed to the public. Police have set up checkpoints at major transit hubs and are working with Interpol to track the piece, fearing it may already be headed for the black market in Eastern Europe.

The *Habsburg Star* remains missing, and for the investigators, the clock is the enemy. Once such a piece is broken down into loose stones, its identity as a historical artifact vanishes — and with it, the best chance of recovery.
