The United States and Iran are set to hold separate talks with mediators in New York as diplomatic efforts continue to ease tensions between the two countries. According to an official familiar with the discussions, Qatari mediators are expected to hold separate meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the US side.

The meetings are expected to take place on Monday or Tuesday, with discussions likely to focus on Iran’s latest proposal aimed at reducing hostilities and creating a framework for renewed negotiations.

Iran’s proposal reportedly includes measures related to ending hostilities, lifting restrictions on Iranian assets, easing sanctions on Iranian oil and ending the US blockade. In return, Tehran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming negotiations over its nuclear programme.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Iranian state media has reported that he is expected to meet with mediators to discuss Tehran’s latest proposals and the broader regional situation.

There has been no confirmation of a direct meeting between US and Iranian officials. Instead, the two sides are expected to communicate through intermediaries as diplomatic efforts continue.

US President Donald Trump had earlier indicated that Iran’s proposal had been rejected, but later said that further talks were possible. Araghchi, meanwhile, said Tehran had not received formal notification that Washington had rejected the proposal and was awaiting the US position.

The Strait of Hormuz is expected to remain an important issue in the discussions. Iranian officials have linked the reopening of the strategic waterway to a reduction in US military pressure and the fulfilment of other conditions.

The latest diplomatic activity highlights ongoing efforts to find a negotiated path between Washington and Tehran. The upcoming talks could address hostilities, the Strait of Hormuz, economic sanctions and the future of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.
