Veteran Gujarati actor and theatre personality Arvind Vekaria, the father of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah star Tanmay Vekaria — who plays the beloved character of Bagha — has passed away at the age of 77. The news was confirmed by the Cine and TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), which issued a formal condolence on social media.

The cause of death has not been officially disclosed. The loss has left the entire Indian entertainment industry in mourning.

WHO WAS ARVIND VEKARIA?

Arvind Vekaria was a distinguished veteran of Gujarati theatre and cinema, known for decades of contribution to the performing arts as both an actor and director. He was well known for his performances in Gujarati films such as Yashoda, Chhanu Chamaklo, and Rupiyo Naach Nachave, and also appeared in the popular superhero TV series Shaktimaan.

Television viewers may also remember him from a guest appearance in TMKOC, where he played a jeweller whom Atmaram Bhide approaches to secretly mortgage his wife Madhavi’s jewellery during a financial crisis. Though brief, his appearance was fondly remembered by fans who later discovered the father-son connection with Tanmay.

In earlier interviews, Tanmay Vekaria had spoken about his father’s profound influence on his acting journey. The actor said, “I was born and raised in Kandivali in a lower-middle-class family. Our family consisted of my parents, my brother Manveet, and me.” His father’s love for theatre instilled in Tanmay the passion for acting from early childhood.

 TANMAY VEKARIA’S PERSONAL GRIEF:

This loss is particularly devastating for Tanmay. In October 2025, he lost his mother. Now, within just a few months, he has lost his father too. A few days before his father’s death, Tanmay was seen breaking down on the sets of TMKOC during the shoot of an emotional scene. Producer Asit Kumarr Modi personally stepped in to comfort him on set, and the shoot was briefly paused.

CINTAA wrote: “#CINTAA expresses its condolences on the demise of senior actor and theatre personality Mr. Arvind Vekaria.”

TMKOC producer Asit Kumarr Modi stated: “The sad demise of Shri Arvind Vekaria ji, father of Tanmay Vekaria who plays Bagha in our show, is a deeply painful loss — not just for Tanmay and the Vekaria family, but for the entire entertainment industry. A veteran of Gujarati theatre and cinema, Arvind ji was a highly respected artist whose contribution to the performing arts will always be remembered. I had the privilege of knowing him personally, and his warmth, humility, and dedication to his art left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. Arvind ji was also associated with Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, and we fondly remember the warmth and grace he brought to every interaction. In this difficult time, the entire TMKOC family stands with Tanmay and his loved ones. We pray to God to give the family the strength and courage to bear this immense loss.”

THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF TAARAK MEHTA KA OOLTAH CHASHMAH:

CHAPTER 1: THE SEED — A GUJARATI COLUMN BORN IN 1971

The story of TMKOC begins not in a TV studio, but in the pages of a Gujarati magazine more than 55 years ago.

Tarak Janubhai Mehta (26 December 1929 – 1 March 2017) was an Indian Gujarati-language humorist, columnist, writer, and playwright. Born in Ahmedabad, he began his literary career as a journalist and deputy editor of the Gujarati newspaper Praja Tantra in 1959–60.

In March 1971, he launched his signature column, Duniya Ne Undha Chasma (meaning “The World with Inverted Spectacles”) in the Gujarati weekly magazine Chitralekha. The column used a deliberately “upside-down” perspective to examine society, politics, cultural unity, family values, and everyday Indian life — all through sharp, clean humor without vulgarity.

The column was built around a fixed ensemble of ageless characters living in a Mumbai housing society, who voiced Mehta’s observations through their quirks and dialogues. These same characters would later become the TV show we all know and love.

For over 40 years, the column continued every week — addressing topics as serious as the 1984 riots, Emergency, political scams, and as light as T20 cricket. Over his prolific career, Tarak Mehta authored 80 books and wrote six acclaimed Gujarati plays. In 2015, he was honored with the Padma Shri — India’s fourth-highest civilian award — for his contributions to literature and education.

He passed away on 1 March 2017, but his legacy lives on through the show that bears his name.

CHAPTER 2: THE LONG ROAD TO TELEVISION — 2001 to 2008

Producer Asit Kumarr Modi first discovered the column and bought its rights in 2001. For the next seven years, he knocked on every door in Bollywood TV.

He approached StarPlus — rejected. He approached Zee TV — rejected. Every channel said: “There is no scope for comedy every day. Saas-bahu serials are what works.”

But Modi believed differently. He said: “I had a feeling that one day, comedies too would become a daily trend.”

Finally, Sony SAB took a chance.

On 28 July 2008, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah premiered on Sony SAB. The show was set in a fictional Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society in Goregaon East, Mumbai (filmed at Film City, Mumbai), and followed the lives of its diverse residents.

The show’s concept was revolutionary at the time — a daily sitcom for the whole family, with no villains, no affairs, no dark drama — just clean comedy, community life, and social messages.

CHAPTER 3: GOKULDHAM — “MINI INDIA” AND THE “8TH WONDER”

The Gokuldham Society was designed to be a microcosm of India — residents from every corner of the country living together, celebrating each other’s festivals, and resolving problems through unity. The show called it “Mini India” and jokingly the “8th wonder of the world.”

The main families and their backgrounds:

Family State/Background
Jethalal Gada Gujarat (Kachchh district)
Taarak Mehta Rajasthan
Aatmaram Bhide Ratnagiri, Maharashtra (Marathi)
Dr. Hansraj Hathi Bihar
Krishnan Iyer Chennai, Tamil Nadu (wife from West Bengal)
Roshan Singh Sodhi Punjab (wife is Parsi)
Popatlal Pandey Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
Abdul Muslim shopkeeper — symbol of Hindu-Muslim harmony

This “Unity in Diversity” theme was the heartbeat of the show and was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, who noted that the show effectively captured this essence of India.

CHAPTER 7: WHY IS TMKOC SO FAMOUS IN INDIA AND PAKISTAN?

In India:

The show’s success is no accident. Scholars at the Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad have studied it as a case study. According to Yashika Singla of The Print: “The major appeal of the television show is the idea of ethics and Indian values at the very core of its scripts. To its credit, it also talked about a multitude of social issues and created awareness about them in its own light-hearted manner. It also had an age-inclusive cast that set it apart from other family dramas, beyond the confines of a typical female-audience focusing saas-bahu serial.”

Key reasons for its success:

  • Clean humor — No double meaning, no vulgarity, safe for all ages
  • Relatability — Everyday middle-class Indian problems
  • Unity in Diversity — Celebrated every festival (Navratri, Eid, Diwali, Lohri, Pongal, Christmas)
  • Social messages — Supported Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Clean India, anti-corruption themes
  • Generational loyalty — Grandparents, parents, and children all watch together
  • Celebrity guests — Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan all appeared on the show

In Pakistan:

TMKOC has been broadcast in Pakistan and has a massive, devoted fan base there too. The show’s themes of family, community, and humor without cultural aggression resonated deeply with Pakistani audiences as well. The characters of Jethalal, Daya, Bhide, and Babita are as beloved in Lahore and Karachi as they are in Mumbai and Delhi. Online platforms like YouTube have made the show even more accessible, with Pakistani fans actively commenting and engaging with TMKOC content.

The show proved that comedy, family values, and human warmth have no borders.

CHAPTER 8: THE CONTROVERSIES — THE DARK SIDE OF THE LAUGHTER:

Behind the laughter, TMKOC has had its share of serious controversies:

1. Disha Vakani’s Return Drama (2017–present): Fans waited 8+ years. Makers repeatedly teased her return but never delivered. #BoycottTMKOC trended multiple times.

2. Neha Mehta’s Exit (2020): Left citing creative differences. Later publicly accused producers of 6 months of unpaid dues. Producers denied, saying she refused to sign exit documents.

3. Shailesh Lodha vs. Asit Modi (2022–2023): Lodha quit citing insulting treatment. Filed a court case. Won ₹1 crore in settlement (August 2023).

4. Jennifer Mistry’s Sexual Harassment Case (2023): Most serious controversy in the show’s history. Jennifer accused producer Asit Kumarr Modi, executive producer Jatin Bajaj, and project head Sohail Ramani of sexual harassment. She also called TMKOC “a jail” and said her dues remained unpaid even 1.5 years after leaving.

5. Ghanashyam Nayak (Nattu Kaka) — Alleged Harassment (2021): Multiple actors including Jennifer and Monika Bhadoriya claimed that Ghanashyam Nayak was also harassed by the makers during his tenure, even while fighting cancer.

6. Palak Sindhwani’s Exit (2024): Left citing mental harassment and panic attacks. Said female actors were discriminated against in pay and treatment. Producers countered with a legal notice alleging contract breach.

7. Munmun Dutta Casteist Slur (2021): Accidentally used a casteist slur in a social media video. Apologized publicly.

8. Gurucharan Singh Missing (2024): Disappeared for 25 days before being found safe at Gurudwaras. Revealed he was going through financial and personal difficulties.

Despite all this, the show has survived every storm — a testament to how deeply embedded it is in the culture of India and Pakistan.

 FINAL WORDS:

The passing of Arvind Vekaria — a man who spent his life on stage and screen, who inspired his son Tanmay to follow the same path, and who briefly graced the sets of TMKOC himself — is a profound reminder of how deeply personal this show truly is.

It is not just a TV sitcom. It is a family, a culture, a legacy — built over 55+ years from a humble Gujarati column to a Guinness World Record holder. Millions in India and Pakistan grew up eating dinner with Jethalal’s misadventures, laughing at Daya’s “Hey Maa, Mataji!”, and feeling a warm sense of community with the residents of Gokuldham.

Arvind Vekaria’s memory will live on — in the halls of Gujarati theatre, in the columns of Chitralekha, and in the heart of every fan who watches his son Tanmay bring laughter to their homes every evening.
