The local river turned into a graveyard this week. Hundreds of dead fish surfaced along the banks of the regional waterway, their silver bodies lining the reeds as temperatures hit a record-breaking 42 degrees Celsius.

Environmental experts are pointing to a simple, brutal cause: the heatwave. As water temperatures climbed, the oxygen levels plummeted, effectively suffocating the fish in a matter of hours.

“The water is literally cooking the life out of the river,” said Dr. Sarah Jenkins, an aquatic biologist monitoring the site. “When water gets this hot, it can’t hold the oxygen these fish need to survive. It’s a silent, rapid collapse of the ecosystem.”

Local residents first reported the smell Wednesday morning. By midday, the scale of the die-off became clear. Thousands of gallons of water are now stagnant, thick with algae blooms that thrived in the intense sunlight, further stripping the river of its remaining oxygen.

City officials have cordoned off the affected three-mile stretch, warning residents to stay away from the shoreline. The cleanup process, handled by a skeleton crew of environmental technicians, is expected to take at least four days.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Similar heat-induced die-offs have been reported in three neighboring counties this month, signaling a broader trend that has local wildlife agencies on edge. While the current heatwave is forecast to break by the weekend, the damage to the river’s population will take seasons, not days, to recover.

Until the water cools and the current clears the debris, the river remains a no-go zone. For the local fishing community, the season is effectively over before it really began.
