WhatsApp accounts are prime targets for cybercriminals. Attackers don’t need sophisticated software to compromise your data; they rely on social engineering and simple oversights. If you aren’t using the app’s built-in security features, you are leaving the door open.

Enable Two-Step Verification Immediately
This is your first and most effective line of defense. Navigate to Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification and create a six-digit PIN. Once active, WhatsApp will require this code whenever you register your phone number on a new device. Crucially, add an email address during setup. If you forget your PIN, that email is the only way to recover your account. Without it, a hacker who intercepts your SMS code could lock you out permanently.

Stop Sharing Your SMS Codes
Hackers often pose as friends or family members, messaging you to say they accidentally sent an SMS verification code to your phone. They ask you to forward it. Never do this. That code is the key to your account. Once you send it, they gain full access to your chats, contacts, and media. If you receive an unexpected verification code, ignore it. WhatsApp never contacts you to ask for a code you didn’t request.

Manage Your Linked Devices
Check which devices have access to your account. Open WhatsApp, tap the three dots (or Settings), and select “Linked Devices.” You will see a list of every browser or desktop application currently synced to your account. If you see a device you don’t recognize—or one you no longer use—tap it and select “Log Out.” Do this regularly. It prevents anyone who may have gained brief access to your phone from maintaining a permanent connection to your messages.

Secure Your Notifications
Your phone’s lock screen can be a security vulnerability. If your phone is unlocked or if you allow preview notifications on the lock screen, anyone can read your private messages without needing access to the app itself. Go to your phone’s system settings and disable message previews for WhatsApp notifications. It adds a layer of privacy, ensuring your conversations stay off your screen until you actually open the app.

What to do if you’re hacked
If you lose access to your account, don’t panic. Reinstall WhatsApp and register your phone number again. The act of verifying your number on your own device automatically logs the hacker out. If they enabled two-step verification to block you, wait seven days for the account to reset.

Security isn’t a one-time setup; it’s a habit. Enable the PIN, monitor your linked devices, and never share your verification codes. Your data is only as secure as the steps you take to protect it.
