Strong Earthquake Jolts Karachi Region; Tremors Felt Across City

Early Tuesday morning, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Karachi, prompting widespread reports of shaking from residents across the city. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the quake occurred at 00:51 Pakistan Standard Time and originated 87 kilometres northwest of Karachi.

Seismological data indicates the earthquake’s epicenter was located at 25.52°N, 66.55°E, with a hypocenter depth of approximately 12 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface — a relatively shallow focus that contributed to the noticeable tremors felt across urban and suburban areas.

Residents in multiple neighbourhoods reported feeling strong shaking. Liaquatabad experienced some of the most intense tremors, while people in DHA Phase 8 and PECHS also described significant movement. Shaking was likewise reported in Shah Faisal Colony, and the quake was perceptible in Somaiani, near the epicentral region.

Although there have been no immediate reports of major structural damage or casualties, some residents expressed alarm as the tremors woke many from sleep and sparked precautionary evacuations from buildings

Local authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow standard earthquake safety practices, such as moving to open spaces, avoiding elevators, and securing heavy furniture. Seismologists are continuing to monitor the affected region for possible aftershocks, which can occur in the hours or days following a significant earthquake.
