King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center has achieved a major milestone in the medical world by setting a new world record.
According to Arab media, Saudi Arabia’s King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center marked World Organ Donation Day by performing 10 kidney transplants within just 48 hours, creating a unique global record in medical history.
Dr. Ehab Abu Farhanah, Deputy Director of the hospital’s Organ Transplant Center of Excellence, said that 10 kidney transplants were successfully carried out over two consecutive days, setting a world record. The transplants were performed by a team of specialists led by Dr. Tariq Ali.
Dr. Ehab further noted that last year the center achieved another milestone by completing 500 transplants since the program began in 2011.
The program aims to help those who are unable to find kidney donors. In Saudi Arabia, the number of people who have pledged to donate their organs after death has reached 533,000.
According to the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, Riyadh tops the list with nearly 142,000 registered posthumous donors. Makkah follows with 115,000 individuals expressing their wish to donate their organs after death.
In the Eastern Province, the number of registered donors has reached an estimated 65,000, while Najran recorded the lowest number with only 1,500 individuals.
