A powerful weather system is sweeping across large parts of the U.S., raising red flags from Texas to California. Forecasters warn of heavy rain and thunderstorms that could trigger flash flooding, especially in southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley regions.
In Texas and Missouri, there’s a risk of severe thunderstorms that may bring damaging winds, hail, and even a couple of tornadoes. The mix of warm, moist air over the Southeast and colder air pushing up from the Rockies is creating a volatile boundary that fuels these storms.
Meanwhile, a second storm system is threatening California’s coastline and mountain ranges. Rain is expected to intensify in Southern California from Thursday night into Friday, and mountain areas could receive significant snow raising the risk of flash floods and possible mudslides.
In the high country of southern California, snow is likely to pile up, particularly above 5,500 feet in elevation, potentially reaching double-digit totals in places.
