SLAMABAD — The federal government on Tuesday announced an unprecedented 97 percent increase in the value of blood money (diyat), setting it at over Rs 19.3 million for the fiscal year 2026–27. According to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the exact value has been fixed at Rs 19,352,390, complying with Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). Diyat represents the legal financial compensation for murder payable by an offender to the legal heirs of a victim. The staggering increase from the previous fiscal year’s rate of Rs 9,828,670 is primarily driven by the surging international market price of silver. Under statutory mandates, the federal government is legally required to declare the local financial equivalent of 30,630 grams of silver at the start of each fiscal year to establish the baseline for the courts, which evaluate the final compensation subject to Islamic injunctions and the financial standing of the parties involved.
