LONDON — A rare Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, rescued from the frigid waters of the North Sea, is embarking on a 5,000-mile journey home. The turtle, named Tally, was found shivering and near-death on a beach in North Wales three years ago, thousands of miles away from her natural habitat in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tally’s recovery at the Anglesey Sea Zoo has been a grueling, three-year process. When she arrived, her body temperature was dangerously low, and she was suffering from severe dehydration. Experts initially gave her slim odds of survival.

“She was essentially comatose,” said Frankie Hobro, the zoo’s director. “Watching her regain her strength has been the highlight of my career. It’s an incredibly emotional moment to finally see her ready for the ocean.”

The logistics of moving a 30-kilogram turtle across an ocean are immense. Tally will travel in a custom-built crate, monitored by a team of veterinarians and specialized handlers. The flight, coordinated by private aviation partners and conservation groups, will take her from the UK to the coast of Texas, where she will be released into the warm waters of the Gulf.

The Kemp’s ridley is the world’s most endangered sea turtle species. Tally likely got caught in the Gulf Stream as a juvenile, drifting across the Atlantic until the cold UK waters forced her to shut down. Her survival is a rare win for conservationists, as most turtles caught in these currents don’t make it.

The release is scheduled for later this week. Once she hits the water, a satellite tag will track her movements, allowing researchers to study how she adapts after years in captivity.

For the staff at the Anglesey Sea Zoo, the goodbye won’t be easy. They’ve spent over a thousand days monitoring her diet, her shell health, and her behavior. But for them, the goal was never to keep her. It was always to get her back to the Gulf.

“We aren’t just releasing a turtle,” Hobro said. “We’re correcting a mistake nature made. She belongs in the wild, not in a tank.”
