The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has officially cut the account opening process for Sahulat accounts to a single day, aiming to draw more retail investors into the stock market.

Previously, the bureaucratic red tape surrounding KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements meant potential investors faced days of waiting. By streamlining the digital onboarding process, the regulator expects to remove the primary barrier for low-income earners and first-time participants who have historically found the capital market inaccessible.

This move isn’t just about speed; it’s a direct attempt to boost liquidity. The Sahulat account was designed specifically for individuals with limited documentation, yet the friction of the old system often defeated that purpose. Now, an applicant’s identity verification will be processed through a real-time link with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), cutting out the middleman and the manual verification lag.

Market analysts have long argued that the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s (PSX) narrow investor base is a structural weakness. With this policy, the SECP is betting that lowering the barrier to entry will encourage a broader demographic—students, small-scale savers, and rural workers—to move their capital from stagnant bank savings into the equity market.

However, the ease of access brings questions about financial literacy. While the SECP has mandated that brokerage houses conduct a basic risk assessment during the one-day window, critics point out that opening an account is the easy part. The real challenge remains educating new investors on market volatility before they commit their savings.

The new rules take effect immediately across all brokerage houses. For the average investor, this means the days of physical paperwork and multi-day waiting periods are over—provided they have a valid CNIC and a bank account linked to their profile.

Whether this move will translate into a significant surge in trading volumes remains to be seen, but for now, the SECP has cleared the technical path for a more inclusive market. The ball is now in the court of the brokerage firms to market these accounts effectively to the masses.
