The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is pushing back against plans to dump thousands of tonnes of silt from a local marina into the Solent. The group argues the dredging operation risks smothering sensitive marine habitats and undermining years of local conservation efforts.

The marina operator says the silt is non-toxic and that offshore disposal is the only viable path to keep the facility operational. They point to historical dredging permits as evidence that the process is safe, but environmentalists remain unconvinced.

“We are talking about a delicate ecosystem that is already under immense pressure,” said a lead campaigner at the Trust. They argue that dumping sediment—even if deemed ‘clean’—changes the seabed composition, killing off seagrass beds and the invertebrates that rely on them.

The Solent is a protected area, home to rare species and vital carbon-sequestering seagrass meadows. For the Wildlife Trust, the issue isn’t just about the silt itself, but the cumulative impact of industrial activity on a site designated for nature.

Regulators at the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) are now weighing the application. They must decide between the economic necessity of keeping the marina’s navigation channels clear and the legal obligation to protect the marine environment.

Previous projects in the region have faced similar scrutiny. In those cases, developers were often forced to explore land-based disposal options, which are significantly more expensive but carry far less risk to the seabed.

The marina operator maintains that land-based disposal would make the project financially unfeasible, potentially forcing the site to close. They are currently waiting on the MMO’s final assessment, which is expected to address whether the environmental mitigation measures proposed are enough to offset the damage.

For now, the silt remains in the channel, and the standoff between commercial interests and coastal conservation continues. The MMO’s decision will likely set a precedent for how future dredging applications are handled across the region.
