The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has warned students and engineering graduates against a fake notification circulating on social media, which falsely claims that engineering technology degrees have been declared equivalent to traditional engineering degrees.
The commission clarified that it has not issued any such notification and rejected the claims made in the viral document.
The fake notification, dated October 29, 2026, claimed that Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Engineering and BS Engineering Technology (Honours) degrees had been recognised as equivalent to Bachelor of Engineering (BE) and BSc Engineering degrees.
It also claimed that a Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE) was equivalent to 14 years of education in the relevant engineering field. According to the document, DAE holders would be eligible for direct admission to advanced stages of BE, BSc Engineering and Engineering Technology programmes, subject to university admission criteria.
However, HEC has categorically denied issuing the document and described it as misleading. The commission has advised students, graduates, educational institutions and the general public not to rely on or circulate the fake notification.
HEC further urged people to verify information regarding degree recognition, equivalence and academic policies through its official website and verified social media accounts to avoid being misled by false announcements.
