The 2026 US midterm elections have revealed growing public resistance to the construction of large data centres, as voters across the country demanded greater control over projects linked to artificial intelligence (AI).

According to election reports, voters supported restrictions on data centre development in 40 out of 41 local ballot measures held during the November 3 elections. The measures covered 10 states, reflecting widespread concerns about the impact of these facilities on local communities.

Data centres are large facilities that store and process digital information and provide computing power for artificial intelligence and online services. However, their rapid expansion has raised concerns about high electricity consumption, water shortages, noise pollution and increasing utility bills.

Ohio recorded a particularly high number of local votes on the issue, while communities in states including Maine, Illinois, Kansas and Texas also raised concerns about new projects.

The issue also became part of political campaigns, with several candidates promising stricter regulations or temporary bans on new data centre construction. In Texas, Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa made stronger protections for local communities a key part of her campaign.

The opposition crossed traditional political boundaries, attracting support from both Democratic and Republican voters. Many residents argued that technology companies should not place the financial and environmental costs of large-scale projects on ordinary households.

Technology companies, meanwhile, maintain that data centres are essential for economic growth, artificial intelligence development, job creation and technological innovation.

The election results have placed additional pressure on policymakers to reconsider how data centre projects are approved and regulated. Analysts say the growing resistance could influence future investment decisions and government policies concerning the technology industry.

The 2026 midterm elections have demonstrated that America’s technological expansion is facing increasing public scrutiny, with communities demanding a balance between digital progress, environmental protection and affordable energy.
