CAIRO — Egypt’s foreign ministry issued a sharp statement Tuesday, declaring full support for Saudi Arabia’s maritime security protocols. The message comes as regional tensions test the stability of Red Sea trade corridors.

Cairo emphasized that the security of the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait isn’t just a Saudi priority — it’s a global economic necessity. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid signaled that Egypt will coordinate closely with Riyadh to keep these channels open, warning that any obstruction threatens the flow of international commerce and energy supplies.

The statement follows a spike in threats against merchant vessels operating in the region. For Egypt, the stakes are existential. The Suez Canal remains a primary source of national revenue; when shipping lines divert around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the Red Sea, the Egyptian treasury feels the immediate impact of lost transit fees.

Regional analysts note that Cairo and Riyadh are increasingly aligning their security architecture. While Saudi Arabia focuses on the immediate defense of its coastal infrastructure, Egypt is positioning its naval fleet as a guarantor of safe passage.

“The stability of these routes is non-negotiable,” a regional security analyst based in Cairo said. “Egypt is signaling that it won’t sit on the sidelines while its primary economic artery is held hostage by regional instability.”

Saudi officials have yet to detail what specific joint operations might look like, but the diplomatic backing from Cairo provides Riyadh with significant political cover. It suggests a unified front among Arab states to prevent the militarization of the Red Sea from spiraling further.

The Egyptian government made it clear: diplomatic posturing will no longer suffice. By linking its own economic security directly to Saudi maritime interests, Cairo is demanding a more assertive international response to the threats targeting the world’s most critical maritime choke point.
