Madhubala, one of the four elephants housed at the Karachi Safari Park, is battling a severe health crisis that has left local wildlife experts scrambling for answers. The elephant has been unable to stand for several days, sparking urgent concern among animal rights activists and park management.

Veterinary teams from the Four Paws organization, who previously oversaw the relocation of the elephant Kaavan from Islamabad, are currently monitoring the situation. Initial reports suggest she is suffering from a severe infection, potentially linked to a blood parasite, though full diagnostic results remain pending.

“She’s in a very fragile state,” said one source close to the medical team. “The next 48 hours are critical. We are doing everything possible to keep her comfortable, but the physical toll of her being down for this long is immense.”

The park’s management has faced mounting pressure to explain the decline in her health. Activists argue that the facility lacks the specialized infrastructure required to provide long-term care for ailing elephants, pointing to a history of inadequate enclosure conditions.

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) officials have maintained that they are providing all available resources. They have restricted public access to the area to minimize stress on the animal, hoping the quiet will aid her recovery.

This latest health scare highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the welfare of captive elephants in Pakistan. Experts have long warned that the city’s climate and the lack of professional-grade veterinary facilities make it an unsuitable environment for the species.

Madhubala’s condition remains precarious. Whether the current medical intervention can reverse the damage is a question that weighs heavily on the team working on the ground — and on the future of captive wildlife management in the city.
