Public and private schools in Pakistan face a looming deadline as provincial governments weigh the costs of extended summer breaks against academic targets. While students remain at home, officials are quietly debating a return to the classroom before the scheduled mid-August reopening dates.

The primary driver is the curriculum. With the academic year already compressed by intense heatwaves and the recent general elections, provincial education departments are scrambling to ensure mandatory instructional hours are met. Missing these targets risks a fragmented syllabus for students preparing for high-stakes board examinations.

In Punjab and Sindh, the education ministries are under pressure. “We have lost nearly three weeks of active learning time,” a senior official in the Punjab School Education Department said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because no final policy has been signed. “If we don’t recover that time, the quality of instruction suffers. It’s that simple.”

Parents, however, are pushing back. The current heat index remains dangerously high in many districts, and the monsoon season has brought unpredictable flooding risks. For many families, the prospect of sending children into classrooms—some of which lack adequate cooling or ventilation—is a non-starter.

Teacher unions have joined the chorus of dissent. They argue that the government’s focus should remain on infrastructure upgrades rather than rushing into a calendar that ignores the physical reality of a Pakistani summer.

“The buildings are essentially furnaces,” said a representative for a provincial teachers’ association. “Adding five days or a week to the schedule doesn’t compensate for the lack of basic facilities. You can’t teach in forty-degree heat.”

The debate underscores a recurring tension in Pakistan’s education sector: the struggle to balance administrative requirements with the welfare of the student body. While officials look at the calendar, they must also contend with the reality that an early reopening could lead to a spike in student absenteeism if parents choose to keep their children home out of safety concerns.

As the ministries finalize their notifications this week, the decision will likely come down to a localized approach. Expect authorities to prioritize urban centers with better-equipped facilities, while leaving rural districts—where infrastructure gaps are most pronounced—on the original schedule.

The notification is expected to land on school administrators’ desks by Friday, leaving little room for adjustments before the start of the next week.
