A fast-moving fire tore through a nursing home in the southern Chilean city of Chiguayante on Tuesday, leaving 16 residents dead. The blaze, which broke out in the early hours, trapped dozens of elderly individuals inside the facility before firefighters could gain control of the inferno.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly after 3:00 a.m. to find the structure engulfed in flames. While rescuers managed to pull several residents from the smoke, the facility’s layout and the limited mobility of those inside made the evacuation grueling. Most of the victims were bedridden or required assistance to move, leaving them with little chance to escape as the fire spread through the wooden interior.

“The speed of the fire was devastating,” said a local fire chief at the scene. “By the time we arrived, the roof was already beginning to collapse.”

The facility, known as the Santa Marta nursing home, was operating at capacity. Investigators are now working to determine the origin of the blaze. Initial reports from local authorities suggest an electrical fault in the heating system may be to blame, though a formal forensic report is still days away.

For the families of those lost, the tragedy has sparked immediate questions regarding safety regulations and staffing levels. Government officials have pledged a full inspection of all private care homes in the region to ensure emergency exit protocols are up to standard.

The tragedy marks one of the deadliest nursing home fires in Chile’s recent history. As the community gathers for vigils this evening, the focus remains on identifying the victims and providing support to the survivors who were displaced by the destruction.

“We are devastated,” said a relative of one resident while waiting for news outside the cordoned-off site. “They were vulnerable, and they deserved to be safe.”
