Fire crews are battling a significant blaze in the Suffolk countryside, just miles from the Sizewell B nuclear power station. The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon near the coast, sending plumes of smoke across the area and triggering an emergency response from multiple local stations.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they have dispatched several engines to the scene. Ground crews are currently working to contain the fire as it moves through dry brush and coastal scrubland, conditions that have been exacerbated by recent warm, dry weather in East Anglia.

The proximity to Sizewell B has naturally drawn attention. The facility, operated by EDF Energy, remains a critical component of the UK’s power grid. EDF officials have stated that the station is operating normally and that the fire poses no immediate threat to the plant’s infrastructure or safety systems.

Local police have closed off several access roads around the perimeter of the blaze. Authorities are urging residents to keep windows shut and avoid the immediate area to give emergency vehicles clear passage.

While investigators have yet to confirm a cause, the incident highlights the ongoing risk of wildfires in the UK’s coastal regions during periods of low rainfall. Dry vegetation in Suffolk has become increasingly prone to ignition, stretching local resources thin during the summer months.

The fire is currently contained within a perimeter, but shifting winds remain a concern for ground teams. Firefighters expect to remain on-site throughout the night to dampen down hotspots and monitor for flare-ups.

For now, the plant continues to generate electricity for millions of homes, while the focus remains entirely on keeping the flames from reaching beyond the current containment line.
