KARACHI: Everyday eating habits may have a greater impact on liver health than many people realise. A recent report published by EatingWell has highlighted four categories of foods and beverages that experts recommend limiting because frequent consumption may contribute to fat buildup, inflammation and other liver-related problems.

The liver plays an important role in storing nutrients, producing bile and processing substances consumed by the body. While no single food is likely to damage a healthy liver on its own, regularly consuming certain foods in large amounts can increase metabolic stress over time.

Processed Meats

Bacon, sausages, hot dogs and deli meats are among the foods experts suggest limiting. These products can contain high amounts of saturated fat, sodium and preservatives. Regular consumption may contribute to insulin resistance and metabolic problems associated with fat accumulation in the liver.

Ultra-Processed Foods

Packaged pastries, chips and microwave meals often contain refined carbohydrates, added sugars, salt and saturated fat while providing relatively little fibre. Experts warn that diets high in these foods have been associated with a higher risk of fatty liver, fibrosis and cirrhosis.

Fast and Fried Foods

French fries, fried chicken and burgers can combine large amounts of refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats and sodium in a single meal. Research cited by EatingWell found that people obtaining a significant share of their daily calories from fast food had higher levels of liver fat, with the association particularly pronounced among people with obesity or diabetes.

Alcohol

Alcohol places a direct processing burden on the liver. Excessive consumption can increase the risk of fatty liver disease, alcohol-associated hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Experts also note that the liver does not become safer simply because alcohol comes from wine rather than beer or spirits—the amount consumed matters.

What Can Support Liver Health?

Dietitians recommend replacing these foods with more nutrient-dense choices, including whole grains, beans, lentils, fatty fish and healthy fats such as olive oil. Unsweetened tea, black coffee and unsweetened sparkling water can also be alternatives to sugary drinks.

Experts emphasise that protecting liver health does not require extreme diets or restrictive cleanses. Instead, consistently choosing nutritious foods and reducing highly processed, fried and alcoholic options can support better liver health over time.
