The Punjab government has announced a major change to the identity of one of Pakistan’s oldest and most historic educational institutions, Government College University (GCU) Lahore. Under a new legislative move, the institution will return to its former name, Government College Lahore, restoring the historic identity it carried for more than a century. The decision is part of a wider initiative involving six public-sector higher education institutions across Punjab.
The change follows the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act, 2026. According to reports, the Punjab Higher Education Department issued a notification on October 23, directing the concerned universities and colleges to implement their revised official names. The move is aimed at bringing back the traditional identities of institutions that were originally established as colleges before receiving university status.
Government College Lahore was established on January 1, 1864, with an initial enrolment of just nine students. Over the years, it developed into one of the country’s most recognised educational institutions. It received degree-awarding status in 1997 and was upgraded to university status in 2002, when it became known as Government College University Lahore.
The name change will also affect five other public-sector institutions, including Government College Faisalabad, Government College for Women Faisalabad, Government College for Women Sialkot, Government Sadiq College Bahawalpur and Lahore College for Women. However, the change is related to their official names and does not mean that their university-level academic functions or degree-awarding powers will automatically be withdrawn.
The development has also raised questions about the administrative process, particularly regarding existing degrees, student records, official documents and future academic certificates. Detailed instructions regarding these matters have not yet been clearly specified. The decision marks a significant change in the identity of some of Punjab’s historic educational institutions while bringing their traditional names back into public recognition.
