The Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) has unveiled a new scholarship program targeting the children and spouses of Pakistani expatriates. The initiative aims to ease the financial burden of higher education for families living abroad, specifically those enrolled in professional degree programs across Pakistan. The scholarships cover a range of fields, including engineering, medicine, and information technology. Officials confirm the grants are open to students currently pursuing undergraduate degrees at public and private sector universities recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). For families struggling with rising tuition costs, this serves as a critical lifeline. Many expatriates contribute significantly to the national economy through remittances, yet their immediate families often face administrative hurdles when seeking institutional support back home. This program bypasses some of those traditional barriers by providing direct financial assistance. The application process is centralized through the OPF’s online portal. Applicants must provide proof of their parent’s or spouse’s overseas employment status, valid documentation of their residency in Pakistan, and verified academic transcripts. The foundation is prioritizing students who demonstrate both academic merit and financial need. Critics of previous scholarship models often pointed to the lack of transparency in the selection process. The OPF claims to have overhauled its internal review mechanism this year, introducing a digital tracking system that allows applicants to monitor their status in real-time. Despite this, questions remain regarding the total number of beneficiaries. While the government has touted the program as a major welfare milestone, it has yet to release a specific cap on the number of scholarships available for the upcoming academic year. “We are committed to ensuring that the children of our overseas heroes aren’t left behind simply because they are studying in a different financial climate,” an OPF spokesperson said during a briefing in Islamabad. The deadline for submission is set for the end of the current month. With thousands of applications expected, the foundation is urging families to ensure their documentation is complete before the portal closes to avoid automatic disqualification.
