Authorities in Sindh have intensified disciplinary action over the HIV outbreak linked to the Kulsoom Bai Valika Social Security Hospital in Karachi by issuing final show-cause notices to 37 officials and staff members. The move follows an inquiry into the outbreak and aims to determine responsibility for alleged lapses in patient safety.

Key developments

  • 37 officials served notices: The Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI) issued final show-cause notices to current and former doctors, nurses, administrators, and other staff.
  • Allegations of negligence: SESSI Commissioner Hadi Bux Kalhoro said the officials face allegations of serious negligence, dereliction of duty, and inadequate oversight.
  • 14-day response period: Those served notices have been given 14 days to submit written explanations and will be offered personal hearings before any final disciplinary action is taken.
  • Inquiry findings: The action follows a comprehensive inquiry into the outbreak, which raised concerns about infection-control practices, patient screening, and supervision at the hospital.

Background

The Valika Hospital HIV outbreak has affected numerous patients, including children. Earlier investigations and screening efforts found the number of affected children had risen, prompting government inquiries, expanded screening, and calls for stronger infection-prevention measures and better support for affected families.
