The morning routine for shopkeepers on High Street has shifted from unlocking doors to scrubbing sidewalks. A persistent flock of pigeons has claimed the town center’s main thoroughfare, leaving behind a mess that has become impossible to ignore.

Business owners are hitting a breaking point. The accumulation of droppings isn’t just an eyesore; it’s a health concern that’s keeping foot traffic away from storefronts.

“I spend forty minutes every day with a bucket and broom before I even open the till,” said Sarah Jenkins, who runs a bakery on the corner. “Customers are literally stepping over the mess to get to my door. It’s bad for business and, quite frankly, it’s unhygienic.”

The local council remains paralyzed by the divide in public opinion. While traders demand immediate action—including professional deterrents or relocation efforts—animal welfare advocates have pushed back, labeling the birds a part of the town’s character and warning against inhumane removal tactics.

Previous attempts to solve the issue have failed. Spikes installed on the eaves of the old library were quickly bypassed by the birds, and ultrasonic noise devices proved ineffective against the hardy urban flock.

The council’s environmental health department is now weighing a proposal for a managed feeding ban, a move that has historically sparked protests in neighboring towns. They’re expected to host a public hearing next Tuesday, though no clear timeline for a solution has been set.

Until the council settles on a policy, the sidewalk remains a high-risk zone for pedestrians. For now, the shopkeepers are left to deal with the fallout, one scrub at a time.
