Increasing Use of Mobile Phones Among Children Raises Risk of ‘Virtual Autism’

The growing use of mobile phones and other screens among children has become a cause of concern for experts. According to specialists, an increase is being observed in symptoms such as lack of attention, delayed speech, changes in social behavior, and temporary forgetfulness among young children, a condition being referred to as “Virtual Autism.”

‎Experts say that when children spend extended periods in front of mobile phones, tablets, or television screens, their mental and social development may be affected. Excessive screen use can lead to autism like symptoms in some children, including reduced social interaction, limited communication, irritability, and difficulty maintaining attention.

‎According to speech therapist Dr. Faiza, the symptoms of Virtual Autism closely resemble those of autism. Such children may experience impaired speech abilities and show less interest in social activities. She advised parents to limit their children’s screen time and protect them from unnecessary use of mobile phones, television, and virtual games.

‎Child specialist Dr. Abdul Jabbar said that increasing screen time is becoming a worrying trend for children’s development. According to him, if children between the ages of two and five are allowed to use screens, it should be limited to quality, age appropriate content under parental supervision.

‎Experts are urging parents to encourage children to participate in playground activities, physical exercise, and social interactions, spend quality time with them, and try to keep them away from screens in order to help prevent symptoms associated with Virtual Autism and other mental and social issues.
