The United States has launched a new wave of airstrikes against targets in Iran after an Iranian missile and drone attack killed two American service members and left one missing at a U.S. military base in Jordan, sharply escalating tensions in the Middle East.
According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the overnight strikes targeted military facilities and infrastructure believed to be linked to Iran’s military operations, particularly around the strategic Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials said the operation was intended to weaken Iran’s ability to conduct future attacks against American forces and international shipping.
The deadly Iranian attack marked one of the most serious incidents involving U.S. forces in the current conflict. In addition to the two fatalities, several American troops were injured, while search efforts continue for the missing service member.
Iran has condemned the U.S. strikes, denying significant damage and warning that further military action would be met with a strong response. The exchange has heightened fears of a broader regional conflict involving neighboring Gulf states and critical energy routes.
International leaders have urged both sides to exercise restraint as concerns grow over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route. Analysts warn that continued escalation could have major consequences for regional stability and global energy markets.
