Karachi will likely see rain starting September 14, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The upcoming weather system is expected to break the current cycle of sweltering humidity that has gripped the city for the past week.

Residents have been enduring “feels like” temperatures exceeding 40°C, a byproduct of high humidity levels and stagnant air. While the PMD forecast suggests relief, the department stopped short of calling it a monsoon revival, labeling it instead as a localized weather shift.

Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz indicated that the moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea are expected to interact with inland low-pressure areas, triggering the cloud cover. Expect intermittent showers in parts of the city rather than a sustained downpour.

The predicted rainfall serves as a temporary reprieve for the city’s power infrastructure. Prolonged heat has pushed the K-Electric grid to its limits, resulting in localized outages across districts like Gulshan-e-Iqbal and North Nazimabad. Utility officials are bracing for the rain, fearing that even light precipitation often leads to technical faults in the city’s aging distribution network.

Traffic management remains a point of concern. Karachi’s road infrastructure frequently turns treacherous with the first drops of rain due to oil slicks and accumulated debris. The city’s traffic police have yet to issue a formal advisory, but commuters should anticipate significant delays on major arteries like Shahrah-e-Faisal if the forecast holds.

For now, the city remains under a heat advisory. Meteorologists suggest that while the rain will drop the mercury, the humidity will likely spike immediately afterward, keeping the environment stifling until the system fully clears by mid-week.

Keep an eye on the sky, but don’t expect a total washout; the city’s infrastructure will be tested regardless of the precipitation volume.
