KARACHI, August 6, 2026: The Karachi administration has decided to modernise the city’s traffic management system by computerising traffic signals and introducing digital fare meters in rickshaws.
The decisions were taken during a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Board chaired by Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi.
Officials told the meeting that work on computerising traffic signals had already begun as part of efforts to ease congestion and improve traffic flow. The first phase will cover five major signals, with the initial installations planned at PIDC, Sindh Club and Avari Towers.
Commissioner Hassan Naqvi informed the meeting that 12 of the city’s 16 non-functional traffic signals had already been restored and brought back into operation.
The RTA Board also approved the installation of digital meters in rickshaws, a move aimed at making fares more transparent and providing greater convenience to passengers.
During the meeting, the commissioner directed the RTA to introduce new bus routes based on the commuting needs of residents. The initiative is intended to improve public transport services and provide relief to citizens facing transportation difficulties.
The administration said the measures are part of broader efforts to improve traffic management and public transportation facilities across Karachi.
