KARACHI — Zeeshan Naz, a local businessman once presumed dead by his family and associates, is in police custody today after investigators uncovered a calculated scheme to vanish alongside his mounting financial burdens.

Naz, a trader based in the city’s bustling commercial district, disappeared late last month. His family reported him missing after his vehicle was discovered abandoned near a canal, leading them to believe he had been kidnapped or killed. The search ended abruptly on Tuesday when police tracked him to a hideout in a remote area of Punjab, where he had been living under a false identity.

The investigation into his “death” began when detectives noticed inconsistencies in the initial kidnapping report. While the family insisted on foul play, the lack of a ransom demand raised red flags. Digital forensic teams traced Naz’s last known movements, revealing he had withdrawn a significant amount of cash from his personal accounts hours before the staged incident.

“He didn’t just walk away; he planned the entire sequence, including planting his own belongings to mislead the investigation,” said a senior official familiar with the case.

Naz’s motivation, according to investigators, was a crushing debt load. He had reportedly borrowed millions of rupees from business partners and local lenders, leaving him with no clear path to repayment. Rather than facing his creditors, he chose to wipe the slate clean by erasing his own existence.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local trading community. For those who had mourned him, the news brings a mix of relief and fury. Many of his associates are now preparing to file formal complaints, seeking to recover the funds they believed were lost with his life.

Naz is currently being transferred back to Karachi for interrogation. Police expect to uncover whether anyone else assisted him in the fabrication, as investigators work to determine if he acted entirely alone.

For now, the man who tried to escape his financial reality through a staged tragedy faces a much harsher one: a criminal record and a courtroom that won’t be easily swayed by his claims of desperation.
