The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Health has blocked an attempt by health officials to discuss the country’s escalating HIV crisis behind closed doors. Lawmakers demanded public accountability, insisting that the surge in infections is a matter of urgent national interest that cannot be hidden from the taxpayers.

The clash erupted Tuesday when ministry officials requested an in-camera session, citing “sensitivity” regarding the data and the potential for public panic.

The committee chair immediately shut down the request, arguing that transparency is the only way to restore public trust in the country’s crumbling healthcare infrastructure. For the committee members, the request for secrecy wasn’t just a bureaucratic hurdle it was a red flag.

With infection rates climbing, particularly in vulnerable districts, legislators are pushing for a full disclosure of how government grants and international aid have been utilized or squandered over the last two years.

“We aren’t here to protect the ministry’s image,” one committee member said following the meeting. “We are here to figure out why, despite millions in funding, we are seeing more cases today than we did three years ago.

” Ministry officials have struggled to provide a coherent explanation for the uptick. While they point to a lack of testing kits and logistical hurdles, critics within the assembly suggest the issue stems from systemic mismanagement and a failure to implement basic screening protocols at the grassroots level.

The rejection of the in-camera briefing forces the health ministry to lay its cards on the table. They are now expected to present a comprehensive, public report on the state of the HIV epidemic at next week’s hearing.

For the thousands of patients currently navigating a broken system, the committee’s refusal to hold a secret meeting is a rare win. But as the government prepares its public defense, the real test remains: whether they can move beyond the data and actually stop the spread.
